Life Experiences Shaping a Humanitarian Perspective
Kim Kang-Woo is a young leader actively involved in human rights and peace-related issues on the Korean Peninsula. He grew up in a North Korean border region under challenging conditions and strict state surveillance.
As a teenager, Kim left North Korea and undertook a long journey through China and Southeast Asia before eventually reaching South Korea. After settling in South Korea, he made the decision to return to North Korea in an attempt to meet and rescue his mother.
His story later received international attention and was reported by The Washington Post. This experience further shaped Kim’s concern for freedom, human dignity, and the conditions faced by North Korean communities.
From Personal Experience to International Advocacy
Kim’s life experiences later led him to pursue leadership and advocacy. In 2025, he participated as a delegate in the North Korean Young Leaders Assembly (NKYLA) and joined leadership and advocacy programs in Washington, D.C.
During the program, Kim engaged in discussions with policymakers, U.S. congressional staff, and organizations working on human rights and religious freedom. He also met with representatives of the U.S. State Department to share perspectives based on his personal experiences of conditions in North Korea, his journey toward freedom, and the role of young people in shaping the future of the Korean Peninsula.
These experiences continue to shape his role as a young leader advocating for freedom, human rights, and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
